KC takes over as nat’l team coach
Dhruba Bahadur KC will take charge of the national football team coach 17 years after he first led Nepal to the All India Governor’s Gold Cup title in Sikkim.KC, who had also led national age-group teams, have been given one-year contract starting from July 17, said the All Nepal Football Association (Anfa) in a statement. His first assignment as the head coach will be the August 31 friendly against India. KC replaces Polish-born American coach Jack Stefanowski. Anfa did not renew Stefanowski ’s one-year contract which expired on May 7. Stefanowski was initially drafted in as Nepal coach in January 2013.
“This will be my second stint as national team coach. I hope to bring positive results during my tenure,” said the chief coach at the National Sports Council KC, who is yet to receive an official contract letter from the football governing body.
He started his coaching career by leading the Under-16 side in the 7th Asian Youth Championship in Kathmandu in 1996. Two years later, KC was handed over the responsibilty to lead the national team in the All India Governor’s Gold Cup and duly paid for the trust by steering his side to the title triumph. But his role as coach ended there and then.
KC also looked after the women’s national team, helping them win silver medals in the 2010 South Asian Games and 2010 SAF Championship. On both the occasions, Nepal lost the Indian team in final.
KC also have had a successful club career, notably guiding Three Star club to league championship in 2006. He also coached Friends Club, Tribhuvan Army Club, Machhindra FC, Nepal Armed Police Club and Saraswoti Youth Club in the Martyrs Memorial A Divison League.
The national team assembles for training on Friday.
