National Athletics Championships
Ashish Chaudhary and Sima Kumari Tharu of Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club were adjudged the best athletes of the 40th National Athletics Championships here on Sunday.Chaudhary stole the limelight among the male athletes, signing off the meet with three gold and a silver medal in the three-day championship held at the Dashrath Stadium. Chaudhary, who had already won gold in 100m and 400m races and a silver in 4x100m relay, added another gold to his name by claiming the 200m title on the final day of the meet on Sunday. He clocked 21.85 to win the 200m race. Min Bahadur Chaudhary finished second and Yamsajan Sunar of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) third.
Tharu was adjudged the best female athlete after becoming the only player during the meet to set a new national record. She set a new mark of 39.46m in winning the javelin throw. Both Chaudhary and Tharu were rewarded with Rs 10,000 each.
Keshari Chaudhary dominated the women’s section by clinching four gold medals. The Nepal Police Club (NPC) athlete, who won long jump, triple jump and 100m hurdles gold, added another title by winning the high jump gold medal. Surya Khatri of TAC struck the men’s high jump gold ahead of Bal Krishna Chaudhary and Amrit Nepali.
Dilmaya Karki of APF secured women’s 200m gold in 26.20. Saraswoti Chaudhary of APF and Ramita Chaudhary of TAC completed the podium places. Hari Kumar Rimal of TAC won men’s 5,000m race. He clocked 15:03.4 to cross the finish line ahead of Lal Bahadur Thapa of TAC and Narayan Thapa of APF. In women’s 5,000m, Kanchi Maya Koju clocked 18:15.6 to win the gold ahead of Bishwo Rupa Budha of TAC and Geeta Khatri of APF.
In shot put, Rajendra Basnet (12.50m) of TAC won gold in men’s category and Chandra Kala Lamgade (10.62) of NPC prevailed in women’s category. TAC bagged the men’s 4x100m relay gold, restricting NPC to second and APF to third. APF won the women’s 4x100 relay gold, ahead of TAC and Central Region.
The Army club clinched the team championship with a total haul of 16 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze medals. APF came second with 13 gold, 12 silver and nine bronze medals. NPC was next with seven gold, five silver and seven bronze medals. A total of 176 athletes from five developmental regions and three departmental teams took part in 36 events.
