Nepal take on Maldives in opener
Nepal will take on Maldives in the inaugural match of the first South Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship which kicks of at the National Sports Council (NSC) covered hall from Friday.Along with the hosts, South Asian powerhouse India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Maldives are in fray for the top prize of $2000. The first and second runners-up will receive $ 1,000 and $ 500 respectively, informed organisers Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA) on Monday.
Nepal play their second match against Bangladesh on Saturday before taking on heavyweights India on Sunday. The home team wrap up their campaign, to be played under round-robin league format, with a clash against Maldives on Tuesday.
NVA President Dan Bahadur Tamang informed the all necessary preparation has been complete to host the event. “We are ready to host the tournament and hope our girls’ will be able to make the best of the exposure through this event,” said Tamang. Tamang informed that Maldives were scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu on Tuesday while the rest of the three other teams will arrive on Wednesday.
The Nepali national women’s team has so far played only four official international tournaments. The first one was way back in 1987 against Thailand followed by two South Asian Games matches in 1999 and 2006. The lastest the Nepali ladies played against an international team was a Maldives friendly in September this year.
NSC Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama, meanwhile, promised “a handsome reward” provided Nepal finish as champions. “Win the tournament and I will make sure you will be rewarded generously,” said the Lama.
