Continuous rainfall has pushed the Babai river’s water level close to the danger threshold, raising flood risks in several riverside areas of Bardiya district.
At 7:13am Tuesday, the Chepang water measurement centre recorded the river level at 6.87 metres. Authorities warn that crossing 7 metres could trigger flooding in Barbardiya, Thakurdwara, Madhuban, and Gulariya.
Local administration has deployed security personnel to high-risk zones for potential rescue operations.
Floodwaters reach the district headquarters, Gulariya, from Chepang in roughly four hours. Officials have urged residents along the riverbank to remain alert and prepare for possible evacuations.
Sirens have been sounded in the flood-prone areas. At the Babai Bridge near Gulariya, water levels have reached 6.50 metres, increasing concerns for safety. Continued rainfall has contributed to rising water discharge in the river.
Chief District Officer Surendra Paudel advised residents to stay vigilant and take precautions as the situation develops.
