The Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal (JSP-Nepal), led by Upendra Yadav, has withdrawn its support to the Lumbini provincial government headed by Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya of the CPN-UML.
Ambika Kafle, the parliamentary party leader of JSP-Nepal in Lumbini, submitted a letter to the Provincial Assembly on Friday, formally announcing the party’s decision in line with Article 188(2) of the Constitution. The Assembly Secretariat confirmed that the letter has been registered.
JSP-Nepal has only one member in the 87-strong Lumbini Provincial Assembly.
UML’s Acharya had assumed office with the backing of multiple parties, including Nepali Congress, Nagarik Unmukti Party, Janamat Party, and Loktantrik Samajbadi Party.
The withdrawal comes amid rising discontent within JSP-Nepal over the performance of the KP Sharma Oli-led federal government, which the party supports without being part of the Cabinet.
In a central committee meeting held in Kathmandu on June 21-22, JSP-Nepal concluded that the federal coalition has failed on key fronts such as governance, corruption control, and constitutional amendments. Party spokesperson Manish Kumar Suman said the party’s parliamentary wing has been asked to reconsider its support.
JSP-Nepal holds five seats in the House of Representatives and three in the National Assembly in the federal parliament. The party’s stance has been decisive, particularly in the National Assembly, as the ruling coalition at the centre doesn’t command a majority in the upper chamber, making it difficult to pass a bill.
