Flood in Bhotekoshi river prompts alert for low-lying areas
Residents along Trishuli river urged to remain vigilant as water levels rise following increased flow from Tibet.
Post Report
Authorities have issued alerts after a sudden rise in the water level of the Bhotekoshi river, which flows into Nepal from Tibet through Rasuwagadhi.
According to Dhruva Prasad Adhikari, assistant chief district officer of Rasuwa, the river’s flow began increasing from around 2am on Wednesday. “We have already issued warnings urging residents of low-lying areas to remain cautious,” he said.
The flood has swept away part of the road under construction near the Rasuwagadhi border point, where Chinese authorities were preparing to install a Bailey bridge.
The flood also damaged a weighing station located at the Timure customs yard.
Meanwhile, the District Administration Office in Nuwakot has also called for caution, stating it received information from Rasuwa about rising water levels in the Trishuli river and the possibility of sudden flooding.
Earlier on Monday, the Rasuwa District Administration had warned of possible floods in the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, Langtang, and Chilime rivers, urging people to stay alert.
The administration, citing data from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and the Chinese side, said that heavy rainfall in the coming days could further raise water levels in the river.
A previous flood on July 8 in the Bhotekoshi river caused significant loss of life and property on both the Nepal and Tibet sides. It also washed away the Nepal-China border bridge.
