Wildfires in two community forests of Tokarpur, Dolakha, have become uncontrollable, posing a significant challenge for local authorities and emergency services. The fire, which began on Friday morning in the Laliguras Community Forest, quickly spread to the neighbouring Chharechhap Community Forest.
Despite efforts by the teams from Nepal Army, Nepal Police, and the Armed Police Force stationed in Doramba, as well as the local residents, the blaze continues to rage.
Santalal Thapa Magar, the chair of Ward No. 3, explained that strong winds have made it nearly impossible to contain the fire. “The intense winds have caused the fire to spread uncontrollably,” Thapa said. “We’ve made numerous attempts to extinguish the flames, but the situation is worsening.”
Although no settlements are immediately threatened, the fire has already destroyed over 60 hectares of forest land in both community forests. Ranger Ram Kumar Shrestha from the Division Forest Office stated that efforts to control the fire are ongoing, with the support of security forces and local authorities. “The fire has spread extensively due to the winds, and the steep terrain is making it even more difficult to control. Only heavy rainfall could help mitigate the situation,” Shrestha added.
Authorities are hopeful that once the fire reaches the Shailung area of Dolakha, they will be able to gain control. The fire has already caused significant ecological damage, threatening the biodiversity of the region.
Meanwhile, in Ramchhap, another fire has broken out in the Lisekhani Community Forest of Gokulganga Rural Municipality-4. The blaze is reportedly spreading towards nearby settlements, and residents are growing increasingly concerned. Locals have reported that at least five homes are at risk from the fire, and, like in Tokarpur, they are working together with security forces to prevent further damage.
