Nepali students studying in Bangladesh have started returning home through the eastern border entry point following the deadly student-led protests against government job quotas in Dhaka and other parts of the country.
According to the immigration office in Kakarbhitta, around 350 students have returned home in the past three days.
Most of the Nepali students are studying medicine and agriculture in various colleges in Bangladesh, including those in the capital Dhaka and Rangpur.
Suja Chhetri from Kathmandu, who is studying at a dental college in Rangpur, said she had been out of contact with her family for the past few days due to the suspension of internet and text message services caused by the protests.
“I called home as soon as I arrived in Kakarbhitta,” she said. “Everyone was thrilled.”
The Kakarbhitta border point is about 35 kilometres from the Bangladesh border. Nepalis are returning home via the Phulbari-Banglabandha route.
Mohanlal Paneru, the chief of the immigration office in Kakarbhitta, said that the number of Nepali students returning from Bangladesh has increased and is likely to rise further.
Earlier on Sunday morning, 56 students arrived in Kathmandu from Dhaka by Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
The ministry said approximately 800 Nepali students left Bangladesh for Nepal by air or via land border points as of Saturday.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, around 3,000 Nepali students are studying in various subjects in Bangladesh.
