The agitating resident doctors at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan, withdrew their protest on Sunday following a five-point agreement with the institute’s administration.
The Junior Resident Welfare Society, a group of junior resident doctors, had padlocked the offices of Vice-chancellor Dr Raj Kumar Rauniyar and Rector Dr Guru Khanal on Thursday, accusing the institute of exceeding its foreign student enrolment quotas in MD and MS programmes.
Dr Kabiraj Paudel, the chairman of the society, said they called off the agitation and unlocked the offices after the institute agreed to increase one quota for Nepali students in each of the Medicine, Paediatric and Surgery streams, among others.
The institute has allocated 26 of the total 123 seats in MD and MS levels to foreign students as per the Medical Education Act. Three out of five quotas each in medicine and paediatric, and four of six quotas in surgery have been set aside for foreign students.
The agitating doctors demanded more seats in Surgery, Medicine, Paediatric and ENT for Nepali students.
Following the deal, Vice-chancellor Rauniyar said the quotas were increased keeping in view of the welfare of Nepali students though the government does not provide perks and salary to the doctors, nurses and other employees working in the institute.
