The ruling Nepal Communist Party’s Secretariat meeting on Wednesday ended with a decision to hold the next meeting on November 28.
Earlier in the afternoon, the meeting had taken place amid uncertainty, as party chairs–KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal–were at odds. While Oli was for delaying the meeting by a few days, Dahal was bent on holding the meeting at any cost, even if Oli refused to attend.
In the nine-member Secretariat, the Dahal faction holds the majority.
Oli had been demanding that Dahal must withdraw his political document that he had presented at Friday’s Secretariat meeting. In his 19-page political document, Dahal alleged that Oli failed on multiple fronts and demanded Oli’s resignation.
According to sources, Oli will present his own document when the Secretariat meets on November 28.
“The next meeting scheduled for November 28 will discuss all the documents, including the one that Oli will present that day,” spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha told reporters after Wednesday’s meeting at Baluwatar. “A meeting of the Standing Committee meeting has been scheduled for December 3.”
According to Shrestha, the Central Committee meeting, which was scheduled for November 30, will be held on December 10.
Oli attended Wednesday’s Secretariat meeting, despite his reluctance until Tuesday night, after his meeting with President Bidya Devi Bhandari earlier in the morning. On Tuesday evening, hours after Dahal refused Oli’s request to postpone Wednesday’s meeting and withdraw his political document, President Bhandari had invited Dahal to Sheetal Niwas.
During the meeting, according to Dahal’s private secretariat, President Bhandari advised Dahal to “manage” the conflict and help save the party unity.
In response, Dahal told the President that she should convey the message to Oli instead, as Oli is not only all powerful in the party but also the cause of all the problems, said a member of Dahal’s secretariat.
