Cabinet restores personal secretaries for lawmakers
The decision reverses a policy introduced by the Sushila Karki government after the Gen Z movement and allows federal lawmakers to appoint personal secretaries once again.Post Report
Lawmakers will once again be allowed to appoint personal secretaries after the Cabinet approved the reinstatement of the facility.
Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam said the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday decided to allow both House of Representatives and National Assembly members to hire personal secretaries.
“The Cabinet meeting decided to restore the provision allowing lawmakers to appoint personal secretaries,” Gautam said.
Under the previous arrangement, each lawmaker was entitled to appoint a personal secretary with the rank, pay and benefits equivalent to a section officer in the civil service.
The facility was scrapped by the interim government led by Sushila Karki, which came to power following the Gen Z movement.
Gautam said the decision was made by amending the schedule of the Federal Parliament Office-bearers and Members' Remuneration and Facilities Act 2016, restoring lawmakers’ entitlement to personal secretaries.
Ekram Giri, spokesperson for the Federal Parliament Secretariat, said the Cabinet’s decision had not yet been formally communicated to the secretariat.
Once the decision reaches the Parliament Secretariat, lawmakers will be able to begin appointing personal secretaries.
