Panel probing former home minister Gurung gets five-day extension
Committee says statement recording and fact-finding are complete, but more time is needed to analyse evidence and prepare its report.Post Report
The government has extended the tenure of the committee formed to investigate allegations involving former home minister Sudan Gurung by five days.
The committee, tasked with examining public allegations, share investments and the sources of Gurung’s assets, was originally due to complete its work by Monday. A committee member said the extension was granted at the panel’s request to allow it to complete the remaining work.
Joint Attorney General Achyut Mani Neupane, a committee member, said the panel had completed recording Gurung’s statement and its fact-finding work, but sought additional time to analyse the evidence and prepare its report.
He said the five-day extension took effect on Tuesday.
The panel is chaired by former High Court judge Achyut Prasad Bhandari and also includes Financial Comptroller General Shova Kanta Poudel as a member.
The Cabinet formed the committee on May 6 and gave it 15 days to complete the investigation.
Gurung resigned as home minister on April 22 after questions were raised about the source of his share investments and other assets.
He came under scrutiny after reports linked him to a business partnership with Deepak Bhatta, who is in custody as part of an investigation into the source of share investments and alleged money laundering.
