AmCham Nepal urges reforms to boost US investment
Urges policy, digital, and energy reforms to attract US investors and boost Nepal’s economy.Post Report
The American Chamber of Commerce in Nepal (AmCham Nepal) met Finance Minister Rameshwore Khanal to discuss ways to increase US investment.
The meeting focused on easing business operations for foreign companies by addressing policy hurdles and improving digital infrastructure. AmCham presented eight priority areas, including making Nepal a hub for high-tech data centres, citing the country’s cool climate and abundant hydropower. However, the group noted that unclear regulations and unreliable internet connectivity are deterring investors.
Business concerns such as delays in VAT refunds were also raised. AmCham suggested allowing commercial banks to handle verification processes to reduce paperwork and free up funds.
Renewable energy projects were another focus, with AmCham recommending a “one-door” system, where a single office manages tax exemptions for solar and alternative energy initiatives, instead of multiple offices causing delays.
Minister Khanal assured he would work with relevant departments to implement solutions and create a “pipeline” of projects ready for American investment. AmCham President Kailash Bijayanand said such changes could increase US investment, creating jobs and advancing technology in Nepal.
The meeting included several business leaders advocating for a more transparent and investor-friendly environment to strengthen Nepal’s digital economy.
