Suspected rabid dog injures 48 in Gadhimai

At least 48 people were injured after being bitten by a rabid dog in different areas of Gadhimai Municipality in Rautahat district on Wednesday, triggering fear among local residents.
Children, elderly people and women were among those injured in the attacks. Five of the victims, who sustained severe head injuries were referred to Birgunj for further treatment, according to Provincial Hospital in Gaur.
Dr Murari Thakur, chief at the hospital, said all victims were administered anti-rabies vaccine as a precaution. “Patients with injuries to the head were found to be sensitive cases, so they were referred outside for specialised care,” he said, adding that Chief District Officer Dinesh Sagar Bhusal had also been informed about the incident.
According to Gaur Hospital, of the 48 people injured by the rabid dog, 43 were treated at the hospital and given the vaccines, while five were referred to Birgunj.
The dog reportedly attacked pedestrians as well as children, elderly people and women inside their homes in wards 1, 4, 6 and 8 of the municipality.

Gadhimai Mayor Shyam Yadav said the municipality has requested police support to capture the rabid dog. “There is fear in sending children to school and letting elderly people step outside,” he said.
