Gai puja, Govardhan puja being observed today
Devotees feed cows delicacies and perform rituals to ensure blessings.
Post Report
Wednesday marked the fourth day of Tihar, with Hindus across Nepal observing Gai Puja (cow worship), Goru Puja (ox worship), and Govardhan Puja.
Devotees create replicas of cows and Govardhan Mountain using a paste of cow dung and ochre, applied to courtyards and floors. Cows are offered sweets and delicacies, and the sacred thread worn on Janai Purnima is tied around their tails. The ritual is believed to help the soul cross the mythical Baitarani river to reach heaven.
The celebrations honour cows as sacred and link to Sri Krishna, who, according to legend, lifted Govardhan Mountain to protect Gokul from torrential rains caused by the anger of Indra, the rain god. Oxen are also worshipped in recognition of their vital role in Nepal’s agriculture.
