5 Nepalis rescued from Myanmar online scam centres
The embassy urges caution over fraudulent job offers.Post Report
The Nepali Embassy in Thailand, in cooperation with the Thai government, has rescued five Nepali nationals, including four men and one woman, who were involved in online scam operations in Myanmar.
The individuals were returned to Nepal on Thursday, the embassy said. They were transported through the Tak border checkpoint in Thailand after being freed from Myanmar’s Myawaddy region.
The embassy urged the public to adhere to government guidelines for foreign employment, emphasising the importance of obtaining proper labour permits. It also cautioned against falling for deceptive job offers in countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand, where exploitation risks are high.
This follows the government’s renewed travel advisory last December, which warned of increasing human trafficking and fraudulent recruitment schemes targeting Nepali nationals in these countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) issued a further warning, urging citizens to be cautious and avoid false promises of lucrative overseas employment. This advisory came in response to recent cases of Nepalis trafficked to Southeast Asia, particularly Myanmar’s Kayin province, where they were coerced into illegal activities under harsh conditions.
