House committee interrogates inmate over cooperative fraud

The parliamentary special committee formed to investigate the embezzlement of deposits in various cooperatives interrogated Kedarnath Sharma, chairman of Biratnagar-based Tulsi Multipurpose Cooperative, on Saturday.
Sharma was brought to the committee meeting at Singhadurbar from Nakkhu Jail, where he was sent to judicial custody, for interrogation.
Sharma has been brought to the committee meeting from jail and interrogated over the allegations of embezzlement of cooperative funds as per the committee’s terms of reference, Surya Thapa, the parliamentary committee chair said.
The cooperative, which was declared crisis-ridden on September 13, 2023, has allegedly misappropriated over 1.55 billion rupees.
The committee recorded the statements from the accused persons associated with Gautam Shree Multipurpose Cooperatives, Laligurans Multipurpose Cooperatives, and Gorkha Saving Cooperatives on Friday.
With its three-month deadline approaching closer, the parliamentary panel, tasked with the investigation, has intensified its activities.
