The Nepal Army on Thursday launched ‘Safa Himal Abhiyan 2024’.
Chief of Army Staff Prabhu Ram Sharma formally kicked off the campaign by handing over the campaign flag to Major Aditya Karki at a function held at the NA headquarters in Kathmandu.
Speaking on the occasion, Sharma emphasised that the success of the cleaning campaign would rely on the joint efforts, coordination, and cooperation of all stakeholders.
The campaign aims to manage 10 tons of garbage and five bodies from Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse, the Nepal Army Directorate of Public Relations and Information said in a statement.
The team, which has completed about three weeks of pre-deployment and acclimatisation training, will leave for Mount Everest base camp on April 14 and will be engaged in clean-up for about 50 days.
According to the Nepal Army, the collected degradable waste will be handed over to local units, while the non-degradable waste will be transferred to organisations specialising in recycling waste.
The Nepali Army says it believes the campaign will play a significant role in minimising the impact of environmental pollution and climate change.
