The Department of Transport Management on Wednesday increased the fares for public transport and cargo carriers plying on inter-province routes following the increase in the price of diesel.

The rates were adjusted according to the ‘auto pricing mechanism’ and would come into effect from Wednesday, the department said in a notice.

Under the system, the government can revise fares up and down whenever the prices of petroleum products fluctuate by more than 5 percent.

The fare of passenger vehicles has been increased by 4.70 percent.

Likewise, the fare of cargo carriers plying on hilly roads has been hiked by 6.15 percent. The fare of cargo carriers operating in the Tarai area has increased by 6.83 percent.

“The revised rates are applicable to the vehicles travelling through two or more provinces on the national-level routes,” the notice reads.

The department said the diesel price has increased by Rs21 on average from the last time the fares were adjusted on July 17.

The Nepal Oil Corporation on Tuesday increased the price of petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and 14 per litre respectively.

Consumers will now have to pay Rs178 per litre for petrol and Rs167 per litre for diesel and kerosene in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Dipayal. They have to pay Rs177 for petrol and 166 for diesel and kerosene per litre in Surkhet and Dang and it will cost Rs175.50 for petrol and 164.50 for diesel and kerosene in Charaali, Biratnagar, Janakpur, Amlekhgunj, Bhalwari, Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi and Birgunj.
