Landslides obstruct several highways in Nepal
Mudslides triggered by heavy downpours block Siddhartha Highway and Narayanghat-Mugling road section among others.
Post Report
Landslides triggered by incessant downpours have obstructed several roads in various parts of the country on Tuesday.
Mudslides have blocked the Siddhartha Highway, the Narayanghat-Mugling road section, the Kanti Highway, the Madan Bhandari Highway and the Ghorahi-Lamahi road section among others.
The Siddhartha Highway has been blocked since Tuesday morning after a landslide occurred at the under-construction Siddhababa tunnel area. According to Dobhan Police Station, the landslide occurred in Dobhan Damside of Tinahu Rural Municipality-3 along the Palpa-Butwal road section of the highway.
Police said the landslide hit the area where the China State Construction Engineering Corporation has constructed an entry point to the northern side of the under-construction Siddhababa tunnelway. Landslides are frequent in the area since mid-July.
The contractor plans to clear the debris once it stops raining.
Earlier on Monday, three people were injured when boulders crushed a jeep in the area. The highway, which was blocked briefly following the incident, opened for traffic after the debris was cleared.
Landslides occur frequently at the road stretch from Dobhan to Siddhababa during the rainy season, thereby obstructing the road. A 1.12-kilometre tunnel project is being constructed in the stretch which is a landslide-prone and stone slide-prone area.
Likewise, the Narayanghat- Mugling road section has been blocked since Tuesday morning following a landslide.
Superintendent of Police Rameshswar Karki, Chief of Chitwan District Police Office, said that a huge landslide blocked the road at Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality-6 at around 5:30am this morning.
Landslides have been reported in other places on the highway as well, according to the Bharatpur road division office. The office said it will take at least three hours to clear the debris and open the road for the traffic.
The road section, one of the country’s busiest travel routes, has been facing frequent disruptions as the continuous downpours cause landslides.
Meanwhile, the Kanti Highway and a section of Madan Bhandari Highway connecting Hetauda with Kathmandu have been blocked due to landslides triggered by heavy downpours.
Similarly, the Ghorahi-Lamahi road section has been blocked after a landslide occurred at Lamahi Municipality-6, police said. Rajan Gautam, Deputy Superintendent of Police at Dang District Police Office, said the traffic has come to a standstill after the road was blocked last night.
