Probe team to be formed in Nirmala Kurmi’s case

A three-point agreement has been reached between the government and the women from Banke, who had been staging a sit-in in the Capital for the past 48 days demanding justice for Nirmala Kurmi.
The protesters have called off their sit-in after the government agreed to proceed with the case through thorough investigation and prosecution.
On Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, following a discussion with the protesting women, directed Home Secretary Binod Prakash Singh and Inspector General of Police Dhiraj Pratap Singh to form a special investigation team for the case and proceed with the judicial process.
The Ministry of Home Affairs will deploy a special investigation team to probe the case related to the kidnapping and murder of Kurmi, a single woman from Banke.
The 3-point agreement was reached after a discussion was held at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday following the directive from the prime minister.
Women’s rights activist Ruby Khan, who is leading the protest, said that the sit-in that has been going on for 48 days has been called off after the agreement.
“The Prime Minister himself has made a commitment and we have postponed the sit-in with the hope that this agreement will be different from the previous two,” she Khan.
Jitendra Basnet, the spokesperson at the Ministry of Home Affairs, reached Maitighar and made public the agreement reached with the protesting women.
Deputy Secretary of the Ministry, Dilkumar Tamang, said that as per the agreement, a team to conduct a special investigation of the case will be deployed according to Section 12 of the Civil Code of Criminal Procedure.
Similarly, while reviewing the investigation process, it has been agreed that the demand for the formation of a judicial commission put forward by the protesting women will be postponed for now and the government will coordinate for the safety of the protesting women.
