Sarahana Shrestha, a Nepali American, won New York State Assembly seat in the recently held mid-term elections in the United States.
Shrestha, a Democratic nominee for the New York State Assembly in District 103, secured 58.70 percent of the total votes to defeat Patrick Sheehan, a candidate fielded by the Republican Party.
Shrestha garnered 35,493 votes to grab the state assembly seat, while her GOP rival received 23,104 votes.
A first-generation Nepali-American climate organizer and a lifelong advocate for the working class, Shrestha moved to the United States in 2001 from Kathmandu. She became an American citizen along with 50 other immigrants in 2019 at the Ulster County Courthouse in Kingston.
