A 22-year-old Nepali woman was gang-raped by four men in Dwaraka, New Delhi, while she was heading to Mumbai from the Indian capital on Sunday, Indian police said. The incident came to light only after she reached Mumbai.
A First Incident Report has been registered at the Oshiwara Police Station, Mumbai. According to police investigation, the woman from Chitwan had left for Mumbai on May 9 to see her brother and reached Delhi on May 11. Upon reaching the metropolis, she was at a loss and started enquiring about the bus to Mumbai and came in contact with a fruit shop owner who beguiled her with a promise to make necessary arrangements for her journey to Mumbai.
At the dusk, the fruit seller persuaded her to go to his room saying it would not be safe to stay outside, the girl told the police. He raped her in his nearby room, police said. Then the main accused reportedly called three of his friends who raped her too.
The girl told the police that the men threatened to kill her if she shared about incident with anyone. Then the main accused asked why she was going to Mumbai. She also made him talk with her brother in Mumbai over the phone. Until then, her brother was not aware of the incident.
She said the friends of the main accused took her to the train station and put her in a Mumbai-bound train. The rape survivor spoke about the incident only after reaching Mumbai on May 13. The next day, she and her brother went to Oshiwara police station and reported about the incident. Police registered the FIR based on the duo’s account.
Sources said the Oshiwara police station has sent the FIR to the Delhi Dwaraka Uttar Police. Police said the identity and address of the main accused had been ascertained based on the phone conversation between the woman and her brother. Police are preparing to take the girl to Delhi for further investigation.
This is not the first gang-rape incident of a Nepali woman in Delhi. In 2013, three men had kidnapped a Nepali woman from South extension and gang-raped her, before leaving her near a flyover.
Jyoti Singh, 23, was gang-raped in Delhi in 2012. She died in course of treatment in Singapore. The incident had stirred people across India against growing incidents of rape and sex abuse of women and children. The incident was widely known as Nirbhaya case.
