Police fired a dozen rounds of tear gas shells in Ghorahi, Dang, on Monday after situation became tense due to demonstrations by locals over the death of local Meghraj Pun in a road accident.
Twenty-nine-year-old Pun, a resident of Fushrekhali, Ghorahi-18, died on the spot when a passenger bus (Lu 2 Kha 1602) hit the scooter he was riding at Lakhanpark Chok in Ghorahi Municipality-18 after which the irate locals and relatives resorted to protest. The protestors vandalised some vehicles, obstructed vehicular movement and shut down shops.
Mahesh Budhamagar, 24, who was riding pillion on the scooter, was injured, and has been receiving medical attention at Rapti Academy of Health and Sciences.
The locals have been demanding stern action against the bus driver saying that the bus dragged the scooter to “quite a distance”. They are also angry with the police after the latter forcefully picked up the body despite protest from the locals.
As the situation became tense at the incident site, additional police personnel were deployed to collect the body. Police had to fire teargas after the locals obstructed the police from taking the bus to District Police Office.
SP Bel Bahadur Pandey said they have arrested the driver and impounded the vehicle.
