Earlier, the PM had planned to address the nation on television and put his papers on Wednesday. The plan was pushed back to Thursday, said one minister. The PM was expected to step down after the Election Commission submitted the final results of the federal and provincial assembly elections to President Bidya Devi Bhandari on Wednesday.
However, the EC submitted the results at around 8pm which was too late for the PM to address the nation and announce his resignation, the minister said.
Earlier, the PM called a Cabinet meeting and discussed the contents he planned to include in his address. Ministers put their inputs and former Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission, Govinda Raj Pokhrel was tasked to prepare the resignation paper.
The PM had prepared over 10 pages long address, said the minister. But due to his hectic engagements, he did not have time to address the nation, said Commerce Minister Min Bahadur Bishwokarma, so we decided to put it off for Thursday.
Ahead of the Cabinet meeting, almost all ministers took farewell calls at their respective ministries. The first was Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa who was given formal farewell on Wednesday by the Ministry for Energy and Ministry for Urban Development.
Separate programmes were held in the two ministries on the day to bid adieu to the minister who managed the portfolios of both ministries.
