A fire-fighter, who was critically injured in a Birgunj gas bottling plant on Wednesday, died while undergoing treatment in the Capital on Friday.
Sanjeeb Nepal, 22, was being treated for severe burn injuries at Kirtipur Hospital. Sher Bahadur Karki, of Fire Engine Department, said Sanjeeb became the third fatality of the inferno caused due to gas leakage at Super Gas Udhyog. Yadav Adhikari and Madhusudhan Mishra had died at the incident site.
Arun Mahato, another firefighter who was injured in the fire, is being treated in the intensive care unit of the Bir Hospital Trauma Centre in Kathmandu.
Birgunj fire department, which has already lost two of its men, is in a state of shock following the news of Sanjeeb’s death.
“Our hearts have been broken by Sanjeeb’s passing. At this moment, our thoughts are with his family,” Karki said.
Meanwhile, Birgunj Mayor Bijay Kumar Sarawagi called for a high-level investigation into the incident.
“The city lost three of its brave firefighters and the fourth one is fighting for his life. We demand a high level investigation into the incident because their families and friends deserve closure,” he said.
The investigation of police showed that the gas bottling plant had caught fire while workers were decanting LPG from a bullet into storage tank.
