Floods triggered by incessant rainfall have created havoc in most of the Tarai districts. Numerous lives, properties, rice crops and livelihoods have been shattered by the floods.

Floods have inundated thousands of houses, leaving families without food and shelter. Flood victims are either displaced or are taking shelters at their relatives’ houses.

Saptari district is the worst hit by the floods where floods trigged by torrential rain in various rivers have inundated 10,000 houses and displaced 500 families.

At least 100 houses have submerged in the flood water in southern part of Nawalparasi.

Pratappur Village Council Chairman Raj Kumar Sharma said over 100 houses in ward 3 and 8 are inundated by floods. The locals were rescued and sheltered in a local school, according to Sharma.

In Bardiya, a flood in Mankhola inundated 17 households in Bangaudi village, 15 in Kakaura and 4 in Bhaisapura of Basgadhi Rural Municipality, rendering people homeless, according to Nepal Road Cross Society Bardiya-chapter Chairman Krishna Prasad Gautam.

Local Hydrological Center reported the water level in Babai River has crossed the danger mark. Local authorities have warned people of the risk and asked them to move to safer locations.

The flood in the district three years ago today had killed 32 people and affected over 90,000 residents.

In Dhanusha, daily life in the district headquarters has been badly affected due to incessant rainfall for the past four days.

Around half-dozen villages have been inundated by floods in Kamala River in eastern Dhanusha. Likewise, 20 houses in the banks of Charnath River in Chhihittarbigha Village are at high risk of inundation. According to Water Induced Disaster Management Office’s divisional engineer Ananda Kumar Jha, the flood in Kamala River has not caused any casualty so far.

Similarly, water in Jalad River in mid-Dhanusha is persistently increasing. If rain does not stop, there is a risk that the river might swell further and inundate over-a-dozen villages.

The high water-flow in Kamala Irrigation Canal in Kiratpur swept away its embankment last night. Locals and technicians are working to fix a dam near Kiratpur that was damaged by the flood. They began reconstructing from night itself, it is learnt.

Likewise in Banke, three children died while their mother is missing when their house collapsed due to flood last night.

Meanwhile, a woman died after a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall buried her house at Karchowa in Simraungadh of Bara district. The deceased has been identified as Gahanidevi Paswan, 45, wife of Ram Bilas Paswan.

Mahottari suffers

The incessant rain for the past two days has made life miserable in Mahottari. A tree fell on BP Highway near Kalapani obstructing vehicular movement. Vehicles are re-routing through a private land, according to Bardibas Area Police Office DSP Shaligram Sharma.

In Mahottrai district headquarters Jalehswor, a wall belonging to office of Federation of Nepalese Journalist, Mahottari-chapter, collapsed due to overflowing water that came from the north.

The customs office, armed police force office and an army barrack are inundated. Army staffers have been re-located in garage of customs office and animal quarantine office, informed Barrack chief Dinesh Malla.

According to District Police Office DSP Dipak Pokhrel, a total of seven houses have crumbled due to floods at Pipara Rural Municipality, Bathanaha and Jaleshwor Municipality.

Jaleshwor Customs Office Chief Keshav Bhandari said the import-export with India have come to a grinding halt due to incessant rain, even at Indian side. Mainly, a road linking customs office and Janakpur has sustained damage, halting the imports.

27 houses damaged in Chitwan

A flood in Madi Municipality of Chitwan district has damaged 27 houses. Two bridges are swept away by the flood that occurred in Riyu River.

Locals protected themselves by climbing tree or taking shelter in their house roof, said Chitwan CDO Narayan Prasad Bhatta.

The damaged bridges have affected commuters in ward 1 and ward 2 of Madi Municipality.

Nepal Army, security personnel and Red Cross are involved in onsite inspection of the affected regions. Red Cross is trying to bring rescue packages for the victims.
