The Nepalgunj High Court has ordered the District Administration Office in Banke to issue the citizenship by descent in the mother’s name to 19-year-old Ruth Gharti Magar of Khajura.
A joint bench of judges Sheshraj Siwakoti and Bir Bahadur Dangi ordered the Chief District Officer to provide citizenship to Ruth within 15 days. In the past, the DAO had denied citizenship to her as she could not prove that her father was a Nepali national. But her elder sister Nirmala had received citizenship from her mother’s name on February 2, 2007.
After the death of her father Lokraj Gharti, the DAO questioned his nationality. However, Lokraj’s name has been mentioned in the citizenship of her mother, Kamala Gharti. Ruth had filed a case in the court on September 20, 2016 after the DAO denied her citizenship for long.
“I faced problems while studying and in finding a job without the citizenship certificate,” said Ruth. Advocate Sunil Shrestha had helped her in the legal battle.
