The supporters of various political parties, who have been protesting against the constitution amendment bill proposing Province 5 division, clashed with security personnel in Rolpa on Thursday.
The clash erupted when police intervened after the protesters came to blows with the supporters of Nepal Magar Sangh who were attending a programme at Tundikhel.
Police lobbed four teargas shells to take the situation under control.
The protesters of the amendment bill had called for a four-day banda in Rolpa starting Thursday to exert pressure on the government to withdraw the bill from Parliament.
The banda affected the normal life in the district on the first day. Schools, marketplaces and transportation service in the district remained shut.
In Pyuthan, protest against the amendment bill entered its 15th day on Thursday.
Amar Prasad Bhandari, district chairman of Nepali Congress, said they have warned of stepping up the protest in the coming days.
In Arghakhanchi, the main opposition, CPN-UML, has called for a three-day banda starting Friday to press the government to withdraw the bill.
Limbuwan banda in East
PANCHTHAR: Sanghiya Limbuwan Party, led by Sanjuhang Palungwa group, enforced a banda in nine eastern districts, including Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari, demanding a separate Limbuwan state on Thursday. Devendra Kumar Lawati of the party said the banda was a symbolic protest to pressure the government to create a Limbuwan autonomous region. He warned of strong protest if their demand is not addressed.
Rajapur shut for past four days
GULARIYA: The indefinite shutdown called by the people of Khairichandanpur VDC in Bardiya continued to affect normal life in Rajapur Municipality for fourth straight day on Thursday. The VDC has enforced the shutdown to protest the recommendation of the Local Level Restructuring Committee (LLRC) to incorporate the VDC under the proposed Geruwa village council.
UML lawmaker Rawal manhandled
KATHMANDU: Lal Bahadur Rawal, CPN-UML lawmaker representing a constituency in Bajhang, was assaulted by the party cadres over a dispute on forming Kada VDC a separate municipality on Thursday. A member of the delegation of the Kada VDC Man Bahadur Bohora, who had reached the UML party office in Dhumbarahi to collect the signature of the party lawmakers, attacked Rawal after he reportedly refused to sign a memorandum of demand. However, some members of the delegation claimed that the scuffle was the result of Rawal’s aggressiveness.
