Following the arrest of 36 doctors, a majority of whom had produced false academic credentials from Bihar Intermediate Education Council (BIEC) to study medicine in the country, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has decided to review the academic certificates of the doctors that were issued from other Indian boards.

A team of  CIB and officials of Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB) had gone through 1,000 certificates issued by the BIEC and found out that 109 of them were fake.

Superintendent of Police Dibesh Lohani, spokesperson of CIB, said they were closely working with the Nepal Medical Council (NMC) to verify the academic certificates of the doctors.  

Among the thirty-five doctors who had possessed fake higher secondary degree from BIEC, there are no records of 14 doctors, while 16 doctors are found to have increased their marks.

Similarly, two doctors do not have any records, while three of them had appeared in an examination under different names. The CIB is also investigating the assets of the doctors who stand accused of faking their academic credentials.

Properties acquired after the accused doctors completed their MBBS are subject to probe, said CIB Chief and Deputy Inspector General  (DIG) Nawaraj Silwal.

“Using fake certificates to acquire medical degree and then earning based on it is illegal,” said DIG Silwal.

Some of the accused doctors were working in government hospitals, while others had set up their own clinics.
