Dharan
Thirty-year-old Sukhamaya Rai (Limbu) of Phukaden in Liwang VDC-1 was at her home with her three kids while her husband Bir Bahadur had gone to their relative at neighbouring Yakma village on Wednesday evening. It had been raining incessantly since the morning and after having the evening meal, she went to bed along with her daughters Sapana (6 years) and Bipana (3 months) and son Shiris (3 years).

At around 11pm, a landslide swept away her house. She sustained critical injuries in the incident and her three children are still missing.

“I attempted to wake the children and take them to a safer place soon after I knew that landslide hit our house but to no avail. We were swept away. After about five minutes, my head was stuck in mud between two boulders,” Rai said from her bed at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dharan.

“When I regained consciousness, I realised that my leg was fractured. I cried for a help but no one was there to rescue,” she said.

Though the whole VDC was swept away by the landslide, Rai was rescued only in the morning and taken to the Taplejung District Hospital. She was taken to the BPKIHS in a helicopter.

Like Sukhamaya, the condition of 42-year-old Tankamaya Kedem Thopra, who was also injured in another landslide at Lingthep-7, is also critical. Tankamaya has sustained injuries in her head and chest. Her daughter and brother-in-law Bhim Prasad Limbu were also swept in the landslide.

Similarly, Bal Bahadur Rasaili, 22, of Khokling-7 has also sustained injuries all over his body.

“I could not run away when the landslide hit my house,” he said, adding that his leg was fractured in the incident. He said his nephew Basanta died in the landslide.

Authorities said only those who were critically injured in the landslides were ferried to Dharan for treatment.
