The Chitwan District Court on Thursday slapped life imprisonment on eight individuals accused in the murder of Shiva Poudel, then-District President of the Nepali Congress-affiliated Nepal Tarun Dal.
A single bench of Judge Binod Mohan Acharya convicted Sunil Gurung, Sunil KC, Sharan Gurung, Suraj Shrestha, Phanindra Shrestha, Dil Bahadur Lama, Sujendra Rai and Amir Gurung of the murder.
The court also convicted six accomplices—Prakash Tamang, Amit Lama, Bikram Lama, Chandra Bahadur Thapa, Bhim Bahadur Pakhrin and Raj Kumar Ghalan—in the murder, handing down five-year jail term each. Poudel, who was kept in judicial custody at Chitwan Prison on the charge of killing Sanjaya Lama, was attacked there on December 6, 2011. Critically injured, Poudel was taken to Kathmandu for treatment where he succumbed to injuries after a few days.
After his death, Poudel’s widow Binu lodged a complaint against 27 people. The court, however, gave clean-chit to 13 of the accused.
