Gen Z youth, Bara security committee reach six-point verbal deal
Agreement comes two days after the youths and UML supporters clashed in Simara.Laxmi Shah
Gen Z representatives reached a six-point understanding with the District Security Committee on Friday, two days after supporters of the youth group and the CPN-UML clashed in Simara, Bara.
During the talks held at the Armed Police Force Technical School in Pathahiya, officials agreed to address all six demands raised by Gen Z youths. The understanding is verbal, and no document has been signed.
Gen Z representatives said they will resume protests on Tuesday if police fail to make visible progress by Monday.
During the talks, Gen Z leaders Sudan Gurung, Purushottam Yadav, Shiva Yadav, Samrat Upadhyaya and Kapil Kharel accused police of security lapses that allowed UML cadres to attack their members.
Their demands included action against District Police Chief Santosh Tamang and Deputy Superintendent of Police Bed Prakash Joshi, prosecution of UML supporters involved in the assault, examination of call records of detainee Arbind Sah, free treatment and compensation for the injured, and adding two names of alleged assailants to the existing complaint, and security for Gen Z youth. The committee accepted all the demands.
Six Gen Z youths were injured in Wednesday’s clash. The incident began after Gen Z activists protested at Simara Chowk to bar UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel and leader Mahesh Basnet from travelling to Parwanipur via Simara airport for a youth mobilisation event. Tensions escalated into stone-pelting near the airport, vandalism inside the premises, a highway blockade and the destruction of a UML welcome gate and party flags. The Simara airport halted flights and UML leaders could not fly from Kathmandu due to the protests in Simara.
Upadhyaya filed a complaint against six UML cadres. Police have arrested three, including two ward chairs elected from UML, while three others remain at large. District police spokesperson Deputy Superintendent of Police Bijayaraj Pandit said a district court has granted a seven-day remand for investigation.
Simara airport reopened on Thursday after being closed the previous day. The area has remained calm since Friday morning.
Bara Chief District Officer Dharmendra Kumar Mishra said the administration will begin implementing the understanding as soon as possible. Gen Z agreed to the meeting after police arrested the accused Arbind Sah on Thursday night in Hetauda.
