Koireli village of Hima Rural Municipality-2 in Jumla has been declared free of violence against women (VAW).
The village was declared VAW-free model village at the initiative of Hima Rural Municipality and a local VAW-free Model Village Steering Committee. Hima Rural Municipality Vice-chairperson Himali Rokaya said the declaration of Koireli as a model village free of VAW is a welcome move which will send a positive message in the community.
She said the rural municipality has focused on programmes to make local women self-reliant and to lessen their work burden by setting up flour and rice mill and providing them tailoring, hosiery and other handicraft training. Human rights activist Laxmi Kanya Budha claimed that Koireli is the first model VAW-free village in the country. She commended 130 women from the 35 households in the village for creating a history.
