Govt directs local bodies to clear road encroachments

The ministry, following the directive of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority, has directed the local governments to clear obstruction along roads
and pavements to ensure free movement of traffic and pedestrians.
The CIAA, giving the reference of Gaurigau-Sinamangal-Airport road sections—where auto workshops were encroaching roadsides, causing problems for pedestrians and contributing to road accidents—had asked the concerned ministries to remove such encroachments.
The CIAA in its directive had said that as roads and footpaths come under the jurisdiction of local governments, they are responsible for ensuring free and smooth movement of traffic and pedestrians.
The MoFALD has 21 activities which have encroached the footpaths and some sections of the roads.
Storage of the construction materials, setting up garage and workshops, putting shops and outlets, dumping of waste and parking of the vehicles are the major reasons highlighted by the ministry that are responsible for encroachments of roads and pavements.
