Nepal opposes any secession attempt in Spain and unequivocally respects and supports the sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity of Spain, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

“Nepal and the Kingdom of Spain enjoy cordial and friendly bilateral relations based on friendship, cooperation, mutual understanding and respect for each other’s aspirations,” a statement by MoFA reads. “Nepal is of the view that domestic issues must be settled within the constitutional framework of the country,” MoFA added.

Catalonia, which includes the city of Barcelona and is one of Spain’s wealthiest and most culturally distinct regions, voted overwhelmingly on October 1 to secede from Spain. The national government in Madrid, however, has imposed a direct rule in the region.
