Fourteen people from the highly marginalised indigenous Baramu community were elected from various local units in Gorkha.

Two ward chairpersons were elected from Nepali Congress and one from CPN UML while five ward members were elected from CPN (Maoist Centre). Three female candidates representing the group were also elected. 

Prem Baramu, founding chairman of Nepal Baramu Sangh, said 41 people from the community were fielded by different political parties in the May 14 polls.

The fact that fourteen of them got elected is a great encouragement for our people, he said. 

With the inclusion of the members of highly marginalised group in the local governance, the indigenous group having a population of 8,140— according to the 2011 census— hopes to preserve and promote their culture and near-extinct language, Balkura.

Though the Baramu population are scattered in 13 districts, their native language is spoken only in Takukot and Pandrung villages of Gorkha.
