The CPN-UML has concluded that to jeopardise the election by bringing forth the topic of constitution amendment is an anti-political act.

The meeting of the UML standing committee held at party Chairman KP Oli's residence in Balkot on Thursday decided to urge the Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal (RJP-N) not to disturb the election by picking up dispute over the issue of constitution amendment.

Talking to media after the meeting, party secretary cum chief of publicity department, Yogesh Bhattarai, said the topic of constitution amendment is not related to election.

"Since the constitution amendment is a different issue, nobody should disturb the election by bringing forward the issue of constitution amendment," he said.

Noting that the first-phase local level election was held on the basis of the number of local bodies and their boundaries as per the recommendation of the constitutional commission, he said the main opposition party could not agree under any circumstances on the demand of again changing the number and borders of the local units and that also at the threshold of election.

Secretary Bhattarai said the CPN-UML is of the view that the matter of altering the number and borders of local levels, and constitution amendment could be reconsidered after the parliamentary election through the constitutional and legal means if that was at all required.

During the meeting, the UML expressed concern over Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba's statement regarding postponing second round of election and pushing the election towards uncertainty. It urged the government not to make such statement.

Saying the meeting decided that the government's move of postponing the election of four provinces in the name of agitation of Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal would not be acceptable to the UML, Bhattarai stressed the need of holding the second round of election on the scheduled date, June 28.

He said that the party was ready to be flexible on other issues except constitution amendment and increasing number of local levels to bring the RJP-Nepal on board the election.

Bhattarai said, "All the demands raised by the RJP-Nepal cannot be addressed. Only some demands can be fulfilled at present. The UML meeting appealed to the RJP-Nepal to participate in the election scheduled for June 28 holding on to the remaining demands."

He said the CPN-UML would finalise the name of candidates of all provinces by this evening. RSS
