Top US Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is arriving in Nepal on a three-day visit on Saturday, just a week ahead of scheduled local level polls. She is the highest US political leader to visit Nepal in recent past.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi is leading a bipartisan Congressional delegation visit to India, Nepal, Germany and Belgium focusing on national security, the global economy, bilateral and multilateral relations and human rights, the Embassy of the United States said in a statement.

The visit is taking place at a time when Nepal and the US are marking the 70 years of establishment of diplomatic relations this year. The visit also marks the importance the US attaches to its relations to Nepal, said a senior foreign ministry official.

“Our bipartisan delegation travels at a vital time in the US relationship with India, Nepal and our Nato partners,” the statement quoted Pelosi as saying.
