The National Human Rights Commission has expressed its concern over continued obstruction of its monitoring works in Province 2, particularly in Saptari.

The constitutional body said in a statement on Thursday that several of its vehicles were smashed during protests in the Tarai. This goes against the commitment of the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha that it would not obstruct independent monitoring of the human rights situation in the Tarai.

Expressing sorrow over vandalism of the vehicle used by Commissioner Mohna Ansari after her meeting with the family members of those killed in police firings in Maleth, the NHRC said those obstructing its activities were against the principles of human rights.

Brother of slain Sanjan Mehata vandalised the NHRC vehicle parked near his house in Maleth-2. Ansari was there to inquire about Monday’s clash that took four lives.
