Residents of Salleri, the district headquarters of Solukhumbu, have been forced to drink contaminated water, thanks to negligence on the part of local authorities.
Despite being rich in water resources, authorities here have failed to utilise them to provide the locals with clean drinking water.
Locals have time and again complained and knocked on the doors of the authorities, but to no avail.
Srijana Magar of Baku who currently lives in Dudh Kunda Municipality-5 said she had no other option than to drink contaminated water.
“I have been bringing water from the river and using it,” Srijana said, adding: “This could be the reason I have been suffering from various ailments. Srijana’s plight is shared by many in this locality.
Tek Bahadur Rai of Dudh Kunda Municipality-6 accused the municipal office of failing to utilise water resources.
Though locals said they have approached the authorities many a time seeking a solution to the perennial water problem, Kul Prasad Sharma, chief of the District Drinking Water and Sanitation Sub-Division, Solukhumbu, said his office had not received any complaints from the locals regarding water crisis.
He said his office has introduced measures and provided equipment to check cleanliness of water.
