Yadav says state govts should hold local polls
Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav has said the provincial government, not the central government, should hold the local polls for lasting peace and stability through proper implementation of the constitution.Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav has said the provincial government, not the central government, should hold the local polls for lasting peace and stability through proper implementation of the constitution.
Addressing the district convention of the party in Rajbiraj on Saturday, Yadav claimed that the central government’s plans to hold the elections “through the use of force” could put historical achievements including republicanism at stake. He claimed that the government was walking in the opposite direction by preparing to hold the local polls without redrawing the federal boundaries.
“The major parties aren’t serious about ending the political crisis and taking the country on the path of peace and stability. Historical achievements like federalism and republicanism are threatened because of the big parties,” said Yadav, accusing the top three forces of promulgating a charter “more regressive than the Interim Constitution”.
Yadav’s remarks come a day after Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal reportedly told CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli that he would announce the date of the
local polls shortly. Earlier, the PM had assured the Madhesi Morcha that he would
wait for the constitution amendment bill to pass before announcing the elections.
He asked the major parties to amend the constitution and demarcate the federal boundaries before going to the polls.
“The constitution should be duly amended if the government wants early elections. But going to the polls without ending the row over constitution will lead to a confrontation. If the government decides to go to the elections ignoring our concerns, we will resort to protest,” Yadav said on the phone from Saptari.
SSFN gears up for convention
The Yadav-led Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum Nepal is holding its district conventions across the country ahead of its general convention.
The conclave will be the first since the party merged with the Sanghiya Samajbadi Party Nepal and the Khas Samabeshi Party in 2015.
The SSFN has mostly concluded its conventions in the Hill districts and hopes to hold them in the Tarai in the next few weeks, according to SSFN Co-chairman Rajendra Shrestha.
The party has built its organisation in 32 districts while its foreign wings have been formed in 20 countries.
