Nearly 300 earthquake-hit schools in Sindhupalchok are still without proper classrooms. 

These schools are conducting their classes in tents and under open sky.

According to the data of the District Education Office, 500 of the 542 schools in the district were affected by the Gorkha Earthquake.

Schools at Thulosirubari, Kadambas, Kunchok, Kalika Irkhu, Simpalkavre, Nawalpur and Pipaldanda are conducting classes in poorly built huts. 

Kedar Prasad Bhandari, headmaster of Mahendrakanti Secondary School in Kalika-6, said the students were facing difficulty because of growing cold. 

“Most of the students had suffered from cold related diseases during last year’s winter,” he said.

The students in the areas devastated by the June 5 flood are also in a similar situation, without proper classrooms to study. 

Goma Koirala, headmistress of Tatopani Adarbhut Vidhyalaya, said though the school has been running its classes in temporary huts and not out in the open, it is hardly any consolation to the students or the teachers.  “It is still cold inside these huts. The children have started getting sick,” Koirala said.

Most of the schools near Tatopani border area are conducting their classes in huts after the Bhotekoshi river flood destroyed their classrooms .

Tika Prasad Pokharel, acting headmaster of Kodari Secondary School, said the government has not taken any steps to reconstruct school buildings in Tatopani.
