Under the government’s “one medical college in each state” policy, the university has been working to set up the college at Gothgaun, Morang. “We have initiated works to develop Koshi Zonal
Hospital as a medical college. The then chancellor KP Sharma Oli had instructed
to proceed the task,” said
PU Vice-chancellor (VC) Ghanshyam Lal Das, adding that Prime Minister and Chancellor of the university Pushpa Kamal Dahal also supported the plan.
If established as planned, it will be the third medical college in Morang district after Nobel Medical College and Birat Medical College.
According to Das, the PU has demanded a budget of Rs300 million from the
government for the college operation. An estimated Rs600 million will be required to build infrastructure for
the college and additional Rs10 million for the purchase of necessary equipment.
On Thursday, a five-member committee of experts was formed for the operation of the college. The committee is headed by Prof Dr Rupa Singh, former rector of BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.
VC Das said the university would take further initiatives after the committee submitted its study report.
According to him, the zonal hospital administration has also agreed to develop the health institution as the medical college. The PU also plans to establish a trauma centre
Meanwhile, the PU has decided to operate Agriculture and Research Centre in Gothgaun. It will be
named after the late prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala, according to the university administration.
