The second World Women Conference kicked off in the Capital on Sunday with the slogan ‘women of the world will climb the highest peak’.
The six-day meet aimed at gender empowerment will cover themes such as socialism, capitalism, woman victimisation, women’s uprising, feminism, women’s emancipation, women’s role in fight for independence, labour class struggle, women’s role in unions, women in politics, and struggle for women’s freedom.
Inaugurating the conference, Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar said the new constitution had uplifted the status of women in Nepal.
“The constitution has made women stronger. Women now have equal property rights,” she said.
A total of 700 women from across the globe are attending the jamboree that is held every five years.
Women have common concerns such as war affecting them, religion coming in their way of empowerment and gender disparity in wages, said Monica Gatner, the coordinator for the European countries.
“We need to find a solution to these common problems together,” she said.
The conference will conclude with a Kathmandu Declaration. The first World Women’s Conference was held in Venezuela in 2011.
