Zonta Club Kathmandu and Jane Goodall Institute Nepal launch tree plantation drive
The campaign links gender equality and climate action.

The Zonta Club Kathmandu, in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute Nepal (JGIN), launched a tree plantation campaign in Dhunge Dhara, Lalitpur, earlier this week to highlight the intersection between gender inequality and climate change.
Over 165 trees were planted during the event, with each tree personally sponsored by Zonta members. The initiative, led by Zonta’s Committee chairs for Gender-Equal Climate Action Luja Mathema and Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Malika Rana, was supported by JGIN and local community representatives.
“Planting trees is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to restore our planet,” said Bina Rana, president of the Zonta Club Kathmandu. “This campaign also reaffirms our commitment to advancing gender equality and climate justice, recognising that women and girls are disproportionately affected by environmental challenges.”
The programme aligns with the “Zonta Says NOW” campaign, a global call for gender-equal climate action. The campaign views the climate crisis as a human rights issue that impacts women and girls more severely.
“Every little act makes a difference,” said Shristi Singh Bhandari, executive of the Jane Goodall Institute Nepal. “We are proud to partner with Zonta Club Kathmandu in supporting urban reforestation and community-led environmental stewardship.”
To ensure the plantation’s long-term impact, JGIN has partnered with the local ward office to maintain the saplings.
Zonta Club Kathmandu is part of Zonta International, a global organisation committed to advancing the rights and wellbeing of women and girls. The club works to combat gender-based violence, promote gender equality, and support policy reform through service and advocacy.
