Ten mules died of electric shock in Lums village of Chhayanath Rara Municipality in Mugu district on Sunday night.

According to Mugu’s Assistant Chief District Officer Vibhakar Mishra, the mules belonged to three farmers.

Mishra said the animals were electrocuted around 10pm after they entered the area where a transformer had been installed. “The site is about 45 minutes from the district headquarters. A police team has reached the scene,” he said.

Just a day earlier, a buffalo had died from electrocution at the same location.

Mayor Bishnu Kumar Bham of Chhayanath Rara Municipality blamed the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for negligence, saying, “The transformer was placed by the roadside. There was a current leak that killed the mules.”

He added that NEA staff have been directed to file a report on the site. “We have called for technical personnel to relocate the transformer safely and securely. The NEA must compensate the affected farmers,” Bham said.

Access to the area where the electrocution occurred has been temporarily restricted, and locals have demanded compensation and proper safety measures in the installation of power lines.

Mules are still widely used in remote areas of the district to transport daily goods and essential supplies.
