Here are the major highlights of day 13 of the Paris Olympics 2024:
Hockey:
The Netherlands beat Germany 3-1 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw to win the gold medal in men’s hockey at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.
The Indian team took bronze.
Athletics:
American Tara Davis-Woodhall soared to Olympic gold in the women’s long jump on Thursday.
The 25-year-old posted 7.10 metres to take the title from Tokyo Olympic gold medallist and three-time world champion Malaika Mihambo of Germany who claimed silver with 6.98.
American Jasmine Moore jumped 6.96 to secure her second bronze of the Games, after finishing third in the triple jump.
American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone obliterated her own 400-metre hurdles world record with a time of 50.37 seconds to retain her Olympic title on Thursday.
Anna Cockrell made it a US 1-2 in a time of 51.87 and Dutchwoman Femke Bol, who had been expected to challenge for gold, faded in the last 50 metres to take bronze in 52.15.
American Grant Holloway finally added Olympic men’s 110 metres hurdles gold to his sizeable trophy cabinet on Thursday, exploding out of the blocks as usual before cruising to victory.
The 26-year-old, who had claimed virtually every major title in a dominant half-decade including three world championship gold medals, clocked 12.99 seconds.
US teammate Daniel Roberts lunged at the finish line before tumbling to the track to claim silver in 13.09 seconds, beating Jamaica’s bronze medallist Rasheed Broadbell by three-thousandths of a second in a photo finish.
Arshad Nadeem won gold in the Olympic men’s javelin throw on Thursday, beating defending champion Neeraj Chopra of India to clinch Pakistan’s first Olympic medal in athletics.
Nadeem threw his arms up in celebration after breaking the Olympic record on his second throw with a stunning 92.97 metres.
Chopra, with his throw of 89.45, won him the silver medal.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters took bronze with 88.54.
Letsile Tebogo became the first African to win the men’s 200-metre title on Thursday when he powered clear of American duo Kenny Bednarek and a COVID-hit Noah Lyles to claim Botswana’s first Olympic gold medal.
Bednarek chased him all the way to take a second successive silver in 19.62 seconds, with American Lyles, secured bronze in 19.67.
Marathon Swimming:
Sharon van Rouwendaal of the Netherlands won the women’s 10km marathon swimming gold at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.
Australian Moesha Johnson took silver while Ginevra Taddeucci won the bronze for Italy.
Sailing:
Reigning Olympic champions Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti of Italy won gold in the mixed multihull on Thursday, sailing a composed final medal race to secure another Italian victory.
Argentina’s Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco held off Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson of New Zealand to secure silver, with the Kiwis settling for bronze in a tricky light-wind contest.
Earlier, Austria’s Lara Vadlau and Lukas Maehr did enough in their medal race to clinch gold in the mixed dinghy after fighting their way up from the back of the fleet.
Japan’s Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka stayed near the front throughout the double-points finale to secure silver, while Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Karlsson of Sweden picked up bronze.
Britain’s Eleanor Aldridge won the Olympic women’s kite first-ever gold on Thursday, with France’s Lauriane Nolot securing silver and Annelous Lammerts of the Netherlands taking bronze.
Diving:
China’s Xie Siyi successfully defended his gold medal in the men’s three-metre springboard diving at the Paris Olympics on Thursday with 543.60 points.
Teammate Wang Zongyuan took silver while Mexico’s Osmar Olvera got the bronze medal.
Weightlifting:
Chinese young gun Luo Shifang won the women’s 59kg Olympic weightlifting title at the Paris Games on Thursday with a total of 241kg, setting Olympic records in the snatch and clean and jerk.
Canada’s Maude Charron took silver with Taiwan’s defending champion Kuo Hsing-Chun securing bronze.
Indonesia’s Rizki Juniansyah won the men’s 73kg Olympic weightlifting title at the Paris Games on Thursday with a total of 354kg.
The real battle was for second and third, with Thailand’s Weeraphon Wichuma taking silver from Bulgarian Bozhidar Andreev.
Climbing:
Indonesia’s Veddriq Leonardo won a gold medal in the men’s speed climbing at the Paris Games on Thursday in a historic Olympic title for his country.
China’s Wu Peng secured silver with a personal best of 4.75 seconds.
American Sam Watson set a world record to win the bronze medal race.\
Canoe Sprint:
China won Olympic gold in the men’s canoe double 500-metre race at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium on Thursday.
Italy came in second to secure the silver medal, with Spain picking up the bronze.
New Zealand won the Olympic gold medal in the women’s kayak four 500m final at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
Germany came in second to take the silver medal, with Hungary picking up the bronze.
In the final medal race of the day, Germany’s four-man kayak team edged Australia by four-hundredths of a second to take gold in their 500-metre finals race, with Spain claiming the bronze.
Wrestling:
Japanese wrestling juggernaut Akari Fujinami extended her outrageous winning streak to claim the women’s 53kg freestyle gold of the Paris Olympics at the Champ-de-Mars Arena on Thursday.
Ecuador’s Lucia Yepez Guzman took silver while Pang Qianyu of China and Choe Hyo Gyong of North Korea took bronze.
In the men’s Greco-Roman 67kg section, Saeid Esmaeili won the gold as Iran retained the title.
Esmaeili had to fight for his 6-5 win against Parviz Nasibov in the gold medal bout though after the Ukrainian, who took silver, opened up a 3-0 lead in the first period.
Luis Alberto Orta Sanchez of Cuba and Hasrat Jafarov of Azerbaijan took bronze.
Bulgaria’s Semen Novikov denied Iran a second Greco-Roman gold by winning the men’s 87kg event with a 7-0 romp against Alireza Mohmadipiani, who took silver.
Ukraine’s Zhan Beleniuk and Turpal Ali Bisultanov of Denmark won bronze.
Cycling Track:
Frenchman Benjamin Thomas won the men’s omnium race at the National Velodrome on Thursday edging out Portugal’s Iuri Leitao finishing with 153 points.
Belgium’s Fabio van den Bossche took bronze with 131 points.
Ellesse Andrews earned New Zealand’s first track cycling gold to win the women’s keirin final.
Dutch rider Hetty van de Wouw took silver and Briton Emma Finucane won bronze.
Taekwondo:
Uzbekistan’s Ulugbek Rashitov retained his men’s 68kg Olympic taekwondo title on Thursday, beating Jordan’s Zaid Kareem to the gold medal.
Rashitov defeated Kareem in two rounds, scoring 5-4 3-1. Yushuai Liang of China and Edival Pontes of Brazil took bronze.
South Korea’s Kim Yu-jin won the Olympic gold medal in the women’s under 57kg swiftly beating Iran’s Nahid Kiyanichandeh in a show of strength for her country.
Kim defeated Kiyanichandeh in two rounds, 5-1 9-0, a humbling score for the Iranian fighter who holds the world title in her class.
Kimia Alizadeh of Bulgaria and Skylar Park of Canada shared bronze.
Boxing:
Hasanboy Dusmatov claimed the men’s flyweight (51kg) boxing final after beating Billal Bennama at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.
Alcantara Reyes Yunior of dominican republic and Daniel Varela de Pina of
Cape Verdean took bronze on august 4.
China’s Chang Yuan secured gold in the women’s bantamweight(54 kg) final at the Olympics on Thursday by beating Turkey’s Hatice Akba.
Pang Chol-mi of North Korea and South Korea’s Im Ae-ji took bronze after their semi-final defeats.
In the match of the 75kg women’s category Caitlin Parker of Australia and IOC Refugee Olympic Team athlete Cindy Winner Djankeu Ngamba won the bronze medal.
