Here are the major highlights of the events of day 6 of the Paris Olympic2024:
Athletics:
China’s Yang Jiayu claimed gold in the women’s 20km race walk at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.
Yang crossed the finish line in one hour 25 minutes and 54 seconds, Spain’s Maria Perez secured the silver medal in 1:26.19 and Australia’s Jemima Montag won bronze in 1:26.25.
Meanwhile, in men, 20km race walk, Brian Pintado of Ecuador blazed to a glorious gold medal in the 20km race walk at the Paris Olympics.
The 29-year-old pulled away from the field over the final kilometre for the victory on Thursday, crossing the finish line in a time of one hour, 18 minutes and 55 seconds.
Caio Bonfim of Brazil raced to silver in 1:19.09, while 2023 world champion Alvaro Martin of Spain was third in 1:19.11 to kick off the Olympics athletics competition.
Shooting:
China’s Liu Yukun won gold in the men’s 50-metre rifle three positions at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.
Liu’s performance was all class and consistency as he racked up a winning total of 463.6 to win gold ahead of Ukraine’s Serhiy Kulish(461.3) who settled for silver.
Swapnil Kusale’s (451.4) bronze was India’s third medal, all in shooting, at the Paris Games.
Judo:
Zelym Kotsoiev of Azerbaijan won the gold medal in the men’s under 100kg judo at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.
Georgian Ilia Sulamanidze took the silver, while Peter Paltchik of Israel and Muzaffarbek Turoboyev of Uzbekistan won bronze medals.
Italian Alice Bellandi won gold in a dramatic judo competition at the Paris Olympics on Thursday in women’s 68kg judo, while Israel’s Inbar Lanir secured silver on the second medal of the day in judo for Israel.
Canoeing:
Italian Giovanni De Gennaro took gold in the Olympic men’s kayak single final at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium on Thursday, with France’s Titouan Castryck winning the silver, with Pau Echaniz of Spain securing the bronze.
Gymnastics:
American Simone Biles won the women’s all-around gymnastics gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.
Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade took the silver and American Sunisa Lee the bronze.
Fencing:
The United States team triumphed in the women’s foil on Thursday, taking their first Olympic title in the event with a win against the world number one Italy at the Paris Games.
Lee Kiefer had already won individual gold on Sunday before leading her team to the 45-39 victory.
Italy’s coach Stefano Cerioni said though gold would have been better, he was happy his team won silver.
While Japan’s women’s team claimed bronze, beating Canada 33-32 in a tight bout.
Rowing:
New Zealand won gold in the women’s double sculls at the Vaires-sur-Marnes Nautical Stadium on Thursday.
The Romania crew secured the silver medal, while Britain took bronze.
In the men’s double sculls, Romania won gold at the Vaires-sur-Marne nautical Stadium on Thursday.
The Netherlands crew finished second to take the silver medal, with Ireland coming third to secure bronze.
The Netherlands won gold in the women’s four final at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
Britain came second to take the silver, with the New Zealand crew securing the bronze.
Meanwhile in the men’s four final at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium US won gold with the New Zealand four-man team finishing second to secure the silver medal, with Britain taking the bronze.
Swimming:
Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh claimed her second gold medal of the Paris Olympics on Thursday, winning the women’s 200 metres butterfly over the La Defense Arena pool.
The 17-year-old delivered another clinical swim that oozed with teenage exuberance getting to the wall first in an Olympic record time of 2 minutes, 3.03 seconds.
American Regan Smith had to settle for silver for the second consecutive Games, while China’s Zhang Yufei took the bronze.
Hubert Kos won the men’s 200-metre backstroke to give Hungary its first gold of the Paris Olympics on Thursday while Apostolos Christou took Greece’s first medal in a swimming race.
The 2023 world champion came from behind to touch out in one minute 54.26 seconds — 0.56 ahead of silver medallist Christou.
Switzerland’s Roman Mityukov took the bronze.
Kate Douglass underlined her remarkable versatility with gold in the women’s 200 metres breaststroke at the Paris Olympics on Thursday, beating Tokyo champion Tatjana Smith who bowed out of swimming with a silver medal in her final race.
Taking full advantage of her turning prowess, American Douglass nudged ahead of Smith after every length and held off the South African to touch the wall in 2:19.24 at La Defense Arena.
World champion Tes Schouten who finished nearly two seconds behind Douglass won bronze for the Netherlands, her first Olympic medal.
Australia’s women’s swimming team made sure to secure gold in the 4x200 metres freestyle relay at the Paris Games on Thursday.
The Australian team of Mollie O’Callaghan, Lani Pallister, Brianna Throssell and Ariarne Titmus finished in an Olympic record time of seven minutes 38.08 seconds at the La Defense Arena.
The US finished 2.78 seconds behind with Ledecky putting in a fighting third leg to haul teammates Claire Weinstein, Paige Madden and Erin Gemmell up from third to second.
China took the bronze, with Canada fourth.
