Nepal’s national women’s football team will return home winless from their Indonesia tour for a tri-nation friendly.
After a 1-2 defeat to the hosts Indonesia earlier, Nepal lost 0-1 to Chinese Taipei in the Three Nations International Women’s Friendly played on Tuesday.
In the match held at Maguwoharjo Stadium in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei scored the only decisive goal in the second half. Ke-Sin Huang found the net in the 53rd minute. With heavy rain affecting the game, both teams struggled to do their level best.
Nepal, who were without three of the key players—Sabitra Bhandari ‘Samba’, Sabita Rana Magar and Gita Rana—failed to produce any meaningful attacking move throughout the match. With this victory, Chinese Taipei won both of their matches in the Three Nations Cup and clinched the title. They had earlier thrashed Indonesia 5–0, while Indonesia had beaten Nepal 2–1.
“Chinese Taipei were a tough team,” said Nabin Neupane, interim head coach of the women’s team, after the game. “Our players played well. We planned to play defensive and then go on counter attacking when we had the chance.”
Neupane added, “We were able to do well until the first half, but we conceded in the second. We still need to work on the transition from defense to attacking if we need to beat a stronger side like Chinese Taipei.”
Chinese Taipei rank 42 in the FIFA Women’s Ranking and Indonesia are 106. Nepal are 89th on the list.
“I am satisfied with the performance of the players, the fight they showed till the end,” said Anjila Tumbapo Subba, the goalie and skipper of the team against Chinese Taipei. “We played better than expected. I am especially happy with the defenders.”
The team is arriving in Kathmandu at midnight on Wednesday.
